May 25th Guatemala
May 25th
We had breakfast in Flores at Cool Beans Cafe before our 1.5 hour ride to Tikal to see the Mayan ruins.
Although Tikal was packed with tourists, we were able to see some different types of birds, monkeys, and even an agoutis. The Gran Plaza, the main ruin was pretty impressive. Overall, it has been my least favorite thing we have done so far.
When we returned to Flores, we walked across the bridge to Santa Elena and went to the supermarket to buy groceries for camping. We went to Sky Bar to watch the sunset and so Bart could get his free shot from Yaxha hostel.
Then we decided to have dinner at an unnamed place we saw the night before. There were only locals there so we figured it had to be good. There was no menu and nobody who spoke english so we just said yes to the first thing he said. It was an interesting atmosphere with an elderly man playing talk radio and collecting money from the servers.
We met Steven and Tjice at Los Amigos hostel for some drinks afterward. It is definitely a place I would recommend to someone who visits Flores. It was a very unique and eclectic atmosphere. It had many areas and levels of socializing going on. We ran into around 5 people at this place from San Ignacio, Belize. It's very common to run into the same travelers as you go. Our room was so crazy hot that we brought our fans into the common room and slept on some futons.
